Tips for TV Viewing with Your Teen

Teen Wolf

Glee

Explain why you’re watching. Of course you want to know what your teens are viewing on TV, but if you’re joining them out of the blue, they may see it as “watch dog” behavior. If you let them know it’s about spending some family time together—specifically watching something they enjoy—you’ll set a more positive tone from the start.

Talk about what you’ve seen. While your teen may not appreciate questions during the show or movie, be sure to save time to discuss what you just watched. If you’re not sure where to start, ask your teen what he or she liked and disliked.

Socialize. If you and your teens enjoy a particular show together, spend a few minutes chatting before the opening credits. Everyone can feel connected and engaged, rather than isolated or in their own world, which is especially important when teens have their own cell phones and laptops.

Focus on quality. With popular channels like ABC Family, Teen Nick and Disney, lots of quality programming is available to your family. Help your teens find the best shows by reviewing what’s on and trying new series or movies together.
