With the holiday season right around the corner DISH Network felt it’s a good time to tell you a little bit about a family-oriented TV network known as the Hallmark Channel (DISH Network channel 185). If your package does not include this channel or you’re not yet a DISH Network subscriber, you will find that the Hallmark Channel has some amazing family programming including television shows, movies and special events the entire family can enjoy. The holiday season is a special time on the Hallmark Channel with movies and specials to get you in the holiday spirit.
In May 2007, the Hallmark Channel promoted its belief in strong family values by launching “Watch With Me,” a national public affairs initiative to promote television programming the whole family can watch to “spend more time together.” Since its inception, the Hallmark Channel has provided TV viewers some of the most wholesome family entertainment currently available on television.
Hallmark Channel History
The Hallmark Channel actually began as two separate religious cable channels, with each channel being provided programming blocks and its own logo. The two channels were the “American Christian Television Systems” (ACTS) and the “Vision Interfaith Satellite Network” (VISN) and began airing programs in 1992. A year later, the channels were named “The Faith and Values Channel” and began to phase out its religious programming in 1994. Exercise shows, cooking shows, health shows and family-friendly movies and series were added to the network’s lineup.
In 1996, the network was named again; this time, it would be known as “The Odyssey Channel.” In 1998, Crown Media Holdings and the Jim Henson Company bought stakes in the network, and the Hallmark/Henson version of The Odyssey Channel began on April 4, 1999. Religious programming was down to only four hours a day by this time. Henson eventually sold out his interest to Crown Media Holdings sometime in 2000, and the Hallmark Channel, as we know it today, was born on August 5, 2001. Since that date, there has been no religious programming on the channel, but its shows and movies focus on topics related to compassion, love, spirituality, faith and values. The channel’s logo is the well-recognized gold Hallmark crown.
