Homeland is a Showtime® original series that has just been picked up for a second season, much to the delight of its huge fan base. From the same producers as 24, Homeland is psychological thriller that follows CIA Operations Officer Carrie Mathison (Claire Danes) in her fight against terrorism. Carrie worked in the field in Iraq until she was sent back to Langley after being put on probation for her involvement in an operation that was unauthorized by the CIA. British actor, Damian Lewis, plays Sergeant Nicholas Brody, a sergeant in the U.S. Marines recently rescued from Iraq. He spent eight years as a prisoner of war in Iraq, where he was tortured and held in solitary confinement.
Sergeant Brody’s return sparks worry in Carrie because, while in Iraq, she was warned that a prisoner of war had been turned by Al Qaeda. Carrie believes that prisoner of war to be Nicholas Brody. Carrie runs into more than one road block in trying to prove her belief, however, since the entire country views Sergeant Nicholas Brody as a hero, including the Vice President of the United States.
Another obstacle Carrie faces is she suffers from bipolar disorder, for which she takes medication but must keep secret for fear of losing her security clearance and, ultimately, her job. But how could she have such a serious medical condition and the CIA not know it? Carrie’s medical condition is not documented in any way, and she receives the medication she needs illegally from her sister who works in the hospital. Her secret is safe for now, but how long can she carry on this façade for Homeland second season?
The first season of Homeland was filled with twists and turns that kept fans riveted for months. If you missed out on the original airing, production of the Homeland second season begins in 2012, so get caught up in the meantime. Homeland is a captivating TV drama that will leave you impatiently waiting for the next episode. Other stars of the show include Morena Baccarin, who plays Jessica Brody, Nicholas’ wife, David Harewood who plays the Director of the CIA David Estes, and Mandy Patinkin who plays Saul Berenson, Carrie’s mentor at the CIA.
Homeland is not only an entertaining television series, but it also comes at a time when the war on terror has been at the political forefront of American life since 9/11. One can only wonder what secrets will unravel in the Homeland second season. Will Abu Nazir, the terrorist who held Brody captive, finally be found by the CIA after over seven years in hiding? Will Brody’s campaign to become a Congressman be successful? Will the Vice President be exposed for covering up a bombing in Iraq that killed 82 children while he was the Director of the CIA? Will Carrie’s bipolar disorder be exposed and ruin her career? Hopefully, the 2.03 million viewers who tuned into the first season’s finale will watch the Homeland second season premiere coming in 2012.
