HBO’s Boardwalk Empire Premiere – September 16
The wait is over for fans of Boardwalk Empire as we approach the season three premiere on HBO on September 16. Set in Atlantic City, NJ during the prohibition era of the 1920’s, HBO’s hit drama is rife with true-to-life characters like Al Capone, Arnold Rothstein, Charles “Lucky” Luciano and Johnny Torrio. The lead character of the show, Nucky Thompson (portrayed by the critically acclaimed Steve Buscemi) is based on Atlantic City political boss Enoch L. Johnson who used his political influence within the Republican Party to his advantage while deeply entangled in the bootlegging, gambling and prostitution scenes of Atlantic City in the roaring 20’s.
What Does Season 3 Hold for Boardwalk Empire?
We’ll refrain from spoiling anything from season two in case you’re one of the few people who haven’t joined the dedicated audience of Boardwalk Empire. As with many of HBO’s top dramatic series (Game of Thrones, The Sopranos, Deadwood, etc.) the producers and writers are willing to move story and plot lines at a breathtaking pace even if that means losing a key character or two along the way.
Regular viewers of the show are fully aware that the finale of season two was just such an episode that left the audience wondering – what now?
HBO’s kept information about the Boardwalk Empire premiere for season three hushed for the most part, but the teasers have been released indicate this should be a season of challenges from rival gangsters (and possibly those closest to Nucky) that create the dramatic tension and intrigue the show has provided in each of the first two seasons. Certainly the writers will continue to blend historical relevance with the series’ tagline “you can’t be half a gangster” to keep everyone on the edge of their seats throughout season three.
Will Margaret’s marriage to Nucky create a refuge of trust in an untrustworthy landscape? Will Al Capone’s activity in Chicago reach into the Atlantic City realm? Will Arnold Rothstein’s cronies in NYC tire of the exposure their AC counterparts create? Is Nelson Van Alden’s entanglement with Lucy Danzinger ready to explode causing collateral damage of all kinds? What becomes of Eli Thompson now that he’s fallen on the sword to save the power structure in Atlantic City? These and many more questions linger from the first two seasons. Fortunately, audiences around the country get the first answers September 16th!
