For over 40 years, Jeanne Cooper appeared in America’s living rooms as the elegant, sophisticated, outrageous Katherine Chancellor in the TV hit daytime drama, “The Young and the Restless.” On May 8th, 2013 Jeanne’s passing “in peace and without fear” was confirmed by her son, actor Corbin Bernson. Cooper was 84.

Jeanne lit up the lives of everyone she met, and here are 5 ways she inspired not only her
friends and family, but the rest of America.

Trendsetter

Jeanne’s character, Katherine, broke all the rules; changing the future of daytime TV forever. Katherine Chancellor lived a rollercoaster ride of love and loss, including the death of four husbands and one child, infidelity, battles with alcoholism and breast cancer, rising from the dead, and a lifetime feud with “frenemy,” Jill Foster Abbott; storylines that resurrect time and time again throughout the globe.

Age isn’t Just a Number

“40 is the new 30” is a term coined in recent years, but for Cooper, age truly was just a number. In a time when young was the only way to be, Jeanne joined the cast of “The Young and the Restless” at age 45, becoming an instant hit across America. It didn’t matter how old or young she was, she was simply a phenomenon.

Honesty is the Best Policy

Jeanne had an open door policy when it came to pretty much everything, including being open about undergoing plastic surgery. Not only did she admit to the world that she had a facelift, she did it right on TV! Her real life facelift was written into the show and televised, turning the page on elective surgeries being something to be ashamed of.

One Day at a Time

Not only did Cooper admit publicly that she elected to have plastic surgery, she freely spoke about her personal battle with alcoholism. Cooper certainly enjoyed reminiscing about the good ol’ days, but worked hard to maintain sobriety later in life. She also worked with others to help them combat their own struggles with substance abuse, citing that recovering alcoholics looked at her with admiration, even offering up their AA sober chips.

Her Life’s Calling

Cooper’s long and successful career earned her 8 Daytime Emmy Award nominations for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series, a 1993 Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, a Lifetime Achievement Award in 2004; and most notably, a trophy for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series at nearly 80 years of age. While most actors spend just a few years in the limelight, Cooper’s career, lasting over 60 years, literally spanned a lifetime.

Jeanne’s last TV appearance was on May 3, 2013. She is survived by 3 children, 8 grandchildren, and millions of devoted fans. You can follow Jeanne’s longstanding career on “The Young and the Restless” on SOAPnet on DISH, channel 253.

Come on, admit it: you’ve watched some of the myriad of home improvement television shows that seem to keep multiplying over the last few years. Maybe you have been sucked in while flipping through the channels or maybe you found yourself giving in to peer pressure from a home improvement TV junkie. Don’t worry, you are not alone; home improvement television popularity has risen sharply and it doesn’t appear to be going away any time soon.

According June Thomas of Slate, home improvement shows are appealing because they have an extra something that is unique, even in reality tv:

They’re educational, aspirational, and entertaining, but they’re also incredibly raw and real.

Shows like Disaster DIY, The Bronson Pinchot Project, and Divine Design have more real emotion than the typical relationship-based reality show. Sure, there is still staged disaster and the necessary drama of an overreacting host or homeowner. But somehow, the guilty pleasure of watching these meltdowns seems a little less dirty than digging through the shards of a (very publicly) broken relationship–even if it is likely all for the show.

Don’t forget the role our economic recession takes in all this. The American Dream is still to own your own dream home. This is true even if the housing market did take a nosedive and is slowly scratching its way up the cliff again. Maybe, just maybe, watching home improvement TV is a way for us to feel like the house we are in, even if it isn’t the mansion we all secretly wished we could have, might shape up into a smaller version of that dream mansion. Maybe we can also do it on our small family income with our own two hands and a few tools.

Home improvement TV is ultimately about taking something outdated (or even condemned!) and making it into something modern, pretty, and livable. It’s about being proactive in improving your life. It’s about hope; that’s why it’s so popular.

Fans of reality television have a glut of choices to choose from, beginning with those always-compelling TV competitions pitting budding pop singers against each other to make it as an “Idol” or on the strength of their “Voice”. But what about some of the more off-beat reality TV shows coming to the small screen this season? Here is our guide to some exciting new reality TV shows worth checking out.

Currently running in AMC’s Thursday night lineup is Freakshow, which follows Todd Ray and his family business, the Venice Beach Freakshow. Located on the Venice Beach Boardwalk, Ray’s family delights in bringing spectators various oddities and the unexpected. This is a true family affair, as wife Danielle is known as “Freakshow Mama,” running the front office with her beloved five-footed dog nearby. Their daughter, Asia, is looking to become a teacher soon but currently works as the “Rubber Girl” and the “Elastic Lady.” Then there’s Brianna Belladonna, “The Indestructible Woman,” who eats light bulbs and holds two world records in sword-swallowing. There’s the host of the live show, “Amazing Ali,” who is 3’5″ tall, and “The Tallest American” who stands at 7’8″. Rounding out the cast is Morgue, a shock artist with “a taste for the unsettling” and “The Creature,” the first African-American body modification artist. Family businesses don’t come any more deliriously fascinating!

Meanwhile, coming up on ABC’s Tuesday night lineup is Splash. The concept alone is intriguing: it’s a reality show challenging celebrities and stars to dive from dizzying heights into swimming pools – perfect for whetting our appetites for Olympic-style competition until the next Summer Games.

But what really sold us was the cast. You’ve got athletes whom you’d imagine will do well: Brandi Chastain, Ndamukong Suh, Rory Bushfield and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar are no strangers to intense physical activity. You’ve got others drawn from the worlds of swimsuit modeling (seems like a plus in their favor) in Nicole Eggert & Katherine Webb, and a veteran of reality television in Kendra Wilkinson. And there’s the “Hey, I remember you!” factor for Keshia Knight Pulliam and Drake Bell. But the true draw for us is comedian Louie Anderson. He’s not in his physical prime and to us, he’s going to be the “everyman” diver. He’s the sort of “Wow, so that’s what we’d look like trying that dive” part of the show. See who makes the biggest (figurative) splash on the show all season-long!

Finally, ABC has announced an upcoming reality series for this summer called “Whodunnit?” No stars or official air date have been announced, but when they ordered the show early last month, we were hooked:

Each week players will use a variety of crime scene investigation techniques to meticulously uncover evidence that will ultimately reveal who among them is the killer. The interactive series will pit 13 amateur sleuths against each other in a quest to solve a series of puzzling murders. Some will form alliances and others will choose to go it alone just to get them closer to the grand prize. The contestants will reside in a glamorous estate where each week they must solve a new crime in order to advance in the game. Failure to solve the crime will lead to each player’s demise until only three are left standing. In the final episode, only one player will unmask the killer and take home the $250,000 prize.

A mix of Survivor & Sherlock Holmes, we’re relying on deductive reasoning to say it should be fantastic.

It’s almost time for the NFL to shake things up again with the 2013 NFL draft just around the corner. Every fan will be watching with baited breath to see if their favorite team nabs the next NFL superstar. Here’s a look at some of this year’s prospective steals.

· Alex Carder – Carder might not have the prototypical size of an NFL quarterback but he does have all the tools. He is a natural leader with an impressive knowledge of the playbook. His uncanny understanding of the game and strong arm make him an obvious choice for a team needing a new field general. Carder threw for 8,886 yards and 74 touchdowns while playing for Western Michigan.

· Travis Kelce – Cincinnati’s Travis Kelce could earn a spot on an NFL roster. He completed the 2011 season with more catches than team mate Adrien Robinson who was drafted in the fourth round last April by the defending Super Bowl champs the New York Giants. Kelce is a tight end with a mean streak. He’s relentless when blocking and knows how to run after the catch. He will be a hard draft pick to ignore.

· Cooper Taylor – Richman’s strong safety is ranked number 274 in the draft and is being ignored in mock results. But fans and critics could all be in for a surprise. Taylor boasts more collegiate football awards than most teams win collectively. He has been named as a First-team All American by the Associated Press, Walter Camp Foundation and Sports Network. He has also been named Division I National Defensive Back of the Year. Taylor finished his senior year at Richmond with 78 tackles, 5.0 tackles for loss, four interceptions, nine pass breakups, and three forced fumbles.

· T.J Barnes – Fans of smash mouth football are in for a thrill in 2013. A new breed of explosive, super-sized defensive linemen are invading the NFL. Among the notables is Georgia Tech’s T.J. Barnes. Barnes combines size, power, and speed into one premium defensive package. Teams looking for an unrelenting nose tackle could run into Barnes late in the draft.

· Keith Pough – Linebacker Keith Pough didn’t make the top of the draft list but he could be on a starting roster this fall. While at Howard, Pough was named the MEAC Defensive Player of the Year for the 2012-2013 season and is the FCS career leader in tackles for loss with an impressive 71 TFL’s. His performance at the East-West Shrine game earned Pough the Pat Tillman Award.

What’s in store for your favorite team this NFL Draft? Stay tuned. The NFL Draft begins Thursday, April 25. And don’t miss any of this upcoming season’s NFL action with DISH’s NFL Redzone Package.

Imagine the smell of BBQ wafting through the air. You’re gathered with all of your best buddies, super psyched to watch an afternoon ballgame in HD, you’ve just cracked open a cold beverage – and you’re in the great outdoors! It just doesn’t get much better than that!

Yep, spring has definitely sprung, and you know what that means: it’s time to start watching TV outdoors with the Tailgater® by DISH! Whether you’re heading out to the stadium parking lot for a bit of pre-game grilling and chilling in the back of your truck or you’re packing up the RV and taking off on a road trip, the Tailgater® is bound to be your new best friend.

Truly Portable

Weighing in at a mere 10 pounds, the DISH Tailgater is the smallest portable satellite dish available. Its light weight and compact size means that it’s easy to take the Tailgater anywhere you want to go, from the parking lot to the mountains and beyond.

It’s super easy to set up, too. This means no more finding the right height pole or tree, wrangling clunky, heavy devices, then screaming “is it working?” back and forth while you try to catch an elusive signal.

In fact, the Tailgater by DISH offers the exact opposite experience. All the Tailgater requires is a line of sight between itself and the southern sky.

The Tailgater’s technology allows it to automatically locate satellite positions so you don’t have to align – and realign – and realign. Instead, you can just hook the Tailgater up to a DISH receiver and a TV set and you’re good to go. Doesn’t get much easier than that!

Oh, and the Tailgater provides HD content too so you don’t have to settle for low-quality programming when you’re out in the wild.

Truly Awesome

The Tailgater represents the latest in high-tech innovation. In fact, this portable device was recognized by the International Consumer Electronics Association as an honoree in the “Innovations in Design” category last year.

And while that’s definitely quite an honor, the Tailgater’s awesomeness is also evident in its ease of use and its ability to bring people together. Whether you’re planning a movie marathon or a camping trip, this portable device is sure to make your time in the great outdoors more enjoyable.

Keeping up with your favorite fictional characters is easy when you select the DISH package that best fits your program preferences. Check out TV characters who have it all on DISH.

We know they’re fictional but sometimes a character from television has such a great life we can’t help but feel a little envious. Money never seems to be an issue, they have plenty of romance, and it seems like no matter how many challenges they face, things still go their way. Here’s a short list of some of the greatest fictional character who seem to have more than their share of the good life.

Homer Simpson

No, he doesn’t have a fancy house or a ton of money in the bank, but Homer has a beautiful wife who loves him no matter what and three kids who will apparently never become difficult teenagers. He also has a cushy job at the nuclear power plant than remains open no matter how many exotic vacations he takes or how many harebrained get-rich-quick schemes he takes time off to fail at. Also, he has a friend in Moe the bartender. What more could a guy want?

Leslie Knope

Even though she didn’t get to marry Joe Biden, “Parks and Recreation’s” ever hopeful Leslie Knope did get to marry her second-best dream guy, Ben. She’s surrounded by friends, won the election for a seat on the city council, and despite all goofy odds and attempts at self-sabotage, everything seems to be going Knope’s way…for now. Too bad she hasn’t been able to get even one park built yet.

These TV characters may seem to be living a charmed life but we get the fun of watching them bumble and connive their way through life. Keeping up with your favorite fictional characters is easy when you select the DISH package that best fits your program preferences.

When March Madness comes rolling around, many of the same discussions keep popping up. People fill out their brackets, people bemoan their broken brackets (fie on you, Harvard!), and curse those that manage to somehow do well and win. Many of the same questions arise as well: Do we want favorites to win or do we really root for the “Cinderella Story?” Is it really possible for the underdog to win? Just where the heck is Gonzaga anyway?

For us, though, as we look to compile a post-tournament March Madness Movie Dream Team, we have just one question: Why are there so few movies about college basketball?

If you ask someone to name the best sports movie, not just for basketball but for all sports, most sports movie enthusiasts will have Hoosiers on their short list. That was our first thought for our movie dream team, but the problem is that while the University of Indiana team name is “Hoosiers,” the film itself is about the state high school basketball tournament. Dang!

Indeed, it appears that high school basketball is ready to have its story told, if Coach Carter and O are any indication. (Plus, the latter gives us a chance to show Shakespeare to those who think they don’t like the Bard’s work.)

So we are left with a narrow field when looking for college basketball tales, but not a field absent of good stories. First off, we rather like Glory Road, built around the true story of Texas Western College and its quest for the NCAA Basketball Championship in 1966. What makes Texas Western’s story so unique, and we are a sucker for such stories, is that they reached the finals with an all-black starting lineup, a first in NCAA history. This tale of triumph in the midst of racism and discrimination makes this movie one well worth watching.

It’s not just true stories, however, that we like in a basketball movie. (Indeed, we’re pretty sure that Space Jam is not a documentary.) Only slightly less realistic than the Michael Jordan/Bugs Bunny vehicle is Fast Break, a 1979 film staring Gabe Kaplan. This movie features Kaplan as the prospective coach of Cadwallader University in Nevada. In order to secure his dream job of coaching basketball, he has to assemble a team that involves a woman masquerading as a man, someone who is the target of a hitman, and someone with a warrant out for his arrest. We’re not sure “zany” begins to cover it, and where else will you get to see a very young Laurence Fishburne?

(By the way, Fishburne’s other movie for 1979? ”Apocalypse Now.” How’s that for a filmography?)

After that, we’ve got to be honest and say that we had a tough time finding college basketball films. The Air Up There features Kevin Bacon as an assistant college coach looking to recruit an African phenom in the hopes of promotion. Then there’s Blue Chips, staring Nick Nolte and real-life basketball stars Shaquille O’Neal and Anfernee Hardaway. Dig deep enough, you’ll also find One on One, starring Robby Benson as a naive young freshman college player. (He also played an ice skater and a 10,000-meter Olympic runner; that guy has range!)

That’s about it! Maybe the real drama of March Madness means that there isn’t as much room for big screen drama? Maybe the college level is an untapped reservoir just waiting for filmmakers to notice? Maybe people aren’t ready for “Hoosiers 2: The College Years”?

Regardless, we do have some good college basketball films to watch, and that’ll tide us over until next March.
