With Mother’s Day just around the corner, the DISH TV blog would like to honor TV moms with a blog solely devoted to them.
Since there’s no “official” way to judge the best and worst TV moms, DISH TV has compiled a list based on what television viewers have written on the Web. Let’s start with some of the TV moms viewers have loved the most.
Best TV Moms (in no certain order)
Clair Huxtable—How could this lawyer/mother wife of Bill Cosby’s Dr. Cliff Huxtable not make the list of most beloved TV moms? This mother of five proved to America that you could have a successful career and several well-behaved children without the help of nannies, personal assistants and life coaches. Anyone who grew up in the 80’s is sure to have fond memories of Claire and the whole Huxtable family.
Marion Cunningham—Oh Happy Days! Mrs. C. was everyone’s favorite mom when Happy Days ran from 1974-1984, and while the Fonz got most of the attention, and Ron Howard became one of Hollywood’s most talented directors, it was Marion Ross’ Mrs. C. who will always be remembered as the nicest of the Cunningham clan.
Carol Brady—If you didn’t grow up with the Brady Bunch, you missed out on a slice of Americana. When Carol and Mike Brady combined families and introduced us to the concept of the “step” family, TV history was made. What Carol Brady considered bad behavior back then (playing ball in the house and breaking a vase) is pretty mild compared to today’s teens’ bad behavior.
Cindy Walsh—This 90210 mo
m was as naive and well-intentioned as they come. Moving from Minnesota to Beverly Hills was a culture shock to this beloved TV mom, as we watched her struggle with her kids’ dabblings in drugs, dating, drinking and general bad judgment. Cindy Walsh maintained a smile through it all and was constantly sweet to everyone, regardless of the situation.
Mrs. Shirley Partridge—The first single mom in TV history has to make the list. Though David Cassidy and Danny Bonaduce will be the most-remembered members of The Partridge Family, it was Mrs. Partridge who held this musical family together and kept the wheels on the bus going round and round.
Worst TV Moms (in no particular order)
Nancy Botwin—If you have seen the Showtime® hit, Weeds, you know mothers don’t get any worse than this. Amongst her resume of drug dealer, murderer, arsonist, outlaw, wife of Mexican drug lord, and more, her laundry list of felonies clearly does not paint a perfect picture of motherhood. But, the more bad things this TV mom does, the more we want to watch to see what she does next.
Livia Soprano—Tony’s mother Livia, on the HBO hit show, The Soprano’s, was so mean, her own son wanted to suffocate her while she was hospitalized. The actress who played her, Nancy Marchand, was so convincing as this hateful Italian mother, it’s amazing they killed her off after just a couple of seasons. Putting a hit out on your son? Does it get any worse than that?
Peg Bundy—Being married with children was painfully funny when played by Katey Segal in Married… with Children. The long suffering wife of Al Bundy didn’t cook, she didn’t take care of her kids, she made fun of her husband and cared more about her nails and shoes than her own family. The comedic portrayal of this dysfunctional family was named one of Time Magazine’s 100 Best TV Shows of All Time in 2007.
Marie Barone—At one point, it seemed like a good idea to live across the street from your mother, but that didn’t last long for Everybody Loves Raymond’s Debra and Ray Barone. Marie was meddlesome, judgmental, argumentative and often insulting. Doris Roberts’ character, Marie Barone, played the annoying mother-in-law to comedic perfection and will always be remembered as one of the worst TV moms EVER!
